Off to the Races

Here I am, a few years before law school.

Here I am, a few years before law school.

Even as a young kid, I knew I belonged on the back of a horse. As you can see from this picture, (yes…that is me on Black Jack), I could barely see from under the visor of my helmet, and my legs couldn’t reach the stirrup irons.

Nevertheless, as many of you reading this blog know, once you are bitten by the horse bug, your passion for horses and the love for the sport of riding dwells in your soul.

Now, twenty plus years later, I am blessed to have the opportunity to marry my passion for horses with the practice of law.  People often say to me “I didn’t know there was such a thing as Equine Law.”  It is true that law schools may not offer Equine Law 101.  Instead, the practice of equine law is a niche with a unique body of law that very few attorneys frequently engage in.  With that said, if you find yourself needing an attorney for an equine related matter, having a ‘horse person’  representing you really can make a difference.  At the very least, if you have a ‘horse person’ as your attorney, they won’t pay much mind to the fact that you may smell like a horse when you come into their office.  It’s normal, right?

Through this blog, I hope to generate discussion about legal issues that impact Virginia’s horse community, while also sharing my experiences as a horse owner and competitor.  Each week I will discuss the relevant legal issues in the horse community, but welcome your questions and/or comments on relevant topics as well.

Until next time, keep your heels down.
